Every year, more than 5 million people die as a direct result of poor-quality healthcare. That is more than from malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis combined. It is also more than the number of people who die from lack of access to care. SafeCare is dedicated to improving healthcare quality in resource-restricted settings, because quality saves lives.
our mission and vision
At SafeCare, we believe every person has the right to quality healthcare. We strive relentlessly to bring quality healthcare within reach and contribute to a virtuous cycle of trust throughout the healthcare system. Together with our public and private partners, we strengthen healthcare systems and drive structural change in resource-restricted settings.
Our approach is based on internationally accredited standards for identifying and addressing quality gaps and challenges. Offered on a digital platform, our stepwise approach to quality improvement is empowered by actionable data insights to institutionalize and sustain quality healthcare at every level: facility, network, and country.

Improving healthcare quality in resource-restricted settings isn’t easy. Our values enable us to remain steadfast and consistent, and uncover the keys to quality improvement. Our TEAM
SafeCare is active in more than 25 countries and more than 9,000 healthcare facilities. Our Netherlands-based management team is supported by leaders and dedicated teams in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and India.
OUR beginnings
SafeCare is a formal initiative from PharmAccess, the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA). In 2010, these organizations teamed up to develop quality standards that are solid, secure, and realistic for resource-restricted settings. And most importantly, they involve no compromise: SafeCare upholds the same quality standards as other international bodies.
PharmAccess and Medical Credit Fund
Our parent organization, PharmAccess, sees connectivity and data as the keys to sparking a new paradigm in healthcare: creating transformative systems innovations that can be replicated and adopted by others. It focuses on connecting patients and care professionals at the community level, using technology to broaden impact. PharmAccess creates mechanisms for solidarity, to fight inequity.
The Medical Credit Fund (MCF), another PharmAccess organization, provides loans and technical assistance to healthcare providers in five African countries in which SafeCare operates. By providing these loans, MCF enables resource-restricted facilities and networks to obtain the supplies, staff, and improvements they need to become stable, profitable, and sustainable.
towards universal health coverage
Quality healthcare is the precondition of UHC, and better measurement and accountability for health system quality is key. Patients need to trust the quality of the care they can expect. Stakeholders need quality data to accurately assess medical, financial, and accountability risks before they invest in health system quality. Public and private insurance companies need data to determine which providers will assure quality, value for money, and patient satisfaction.
SafeCare contributes to transparency in the scale, scope and quality of healthcare provision and can be used for overall mapping of quality to inform policymaking and accelerate the transition towards UHC.
Our contribution to the SDGs
SafeCare works with governments and public and private partners to create transparency for decision–makers, so they can better allocate resources to ensure health system resilience.
